Description

Portraits I. ADAMS, JOHN (1735-1826). By William Winstanley .. 222 The following advertisement is from a New York newspaper of August 20, 1798: "JOHN ADAMS ESQ President of the United States. To be seen at the Museum for one week only an original full length Portrait Painting (an excellent likeness) of His Excellency John Adams Esq President of the United States. This beautiful painting was lately taken from the life by Mr. Wm. Winstanley now of this city. II. ADAMS, SAMUEL (1722-1803). By John Singleton Copley . 12 III. BRANT, JOSEPH, THAYENDANEGRA (1742-1807). By Charles Willson Peale . . . . . . . . 94 This portrait was painted during a visit of the Mohawk chieftain to Philadelphia in 1797. IV. BURGOYNE, JOHN (1723-1792). By Thomas Hudson . 70 This cabinet portrait, 18 inches high, has never before been reproduced or even known, and portrays the general in his uniform of the Sixteenth Light Dragoons, which he raised, and was originally known as "Burgoyne's Horse." It is in the possession of Burgoyne's granddaughter, and I learned of it through the courtesy of Major General Hon. George Wrottesley, the son-in-law and biographer of Major General Sir John Fox Burgoyne. Reynolds painted Burgoyne in 1766, for the Count de la Lippe, but its whereabouts cannot be discovered. V. BURR, AARON (1756-1836). By Gilbert Stuart . . .240 This portrait has never before been reproduced direct from the canvas. Burr's portraits certainly do belie the man, or is it the man the portraits? To look upon this portrait, or upon the familiar methodistical profile by Vanderlyn, it is quite impossible to reconcile his face and features with his character.
