Lupus - My View After 35 Years

Lupus is similar to a faithful dog attacking its master. With lupus, the immune system mistakenly perceives our healthy tissue as a harmful invader and attacks. Why does this happen? Our body defenses, the immune system, may receive an incorrect or unclear message. Inflammation is normally beneficial, as it rids our body of harmful disease causing agents and prevents further injury. However, lupus inflammation is ongoing and long lasting, which results in tissue damage. Some researchers believe that once a lupus patient's immune system turns on it does not, or cannot, turn off.
