On Black Ice

"...vain accumulation abundant as moans and sibilance of sheets echoing in mirrored labyrinths where mythical beings wander without past or future rising monstrous or god-like from baths and formal gardens where phoenix fables resurrect ephemeral and tragic out of cigarette ashes and tritons from elusive bourbon fountains of youth..." This line from "Night" perhaps sums up better than any other some of the central themes of On Black Ice, a non-fiction collection of short prose works and poems, the majority being autobiographical in nature, while a select few are only loosely based on the author's life experiences. The subject matter varies, including prostitution, infidelity, power, abuse (both physical and of drugs and alcohol), promiscuity, the loss of pets and loved ones and, basically, the unending search to fill the profoundly lonely void which is modern gay life.
