The Forgotten Girmitiyas is the story of indentured laborers brought to Fiji and their fight for equality, leading to Indian and Fijian problems today (with 4 coups in less than 19 years) and changing the landscape of Fiji forever. 'From Sugar Cane to Suva' is a two-part story about the indentured Indians and their relationships with the native people of Fiji. From the Colonial period in the latter part of the 1800's to modern Fiji with all her political and social struggles facing this Island Nation and the world today. Part 1; 'Coolies, The Forgotten Girmitiyas' Here the story is told of the ?rst people from India to serve as indentured laborers on Fiji for the British government in 1879. We shall investigate their daily lives, depicting their in?uence on Fiji's cultural landscape and how their presence has changed the face of this island nation forever. Part 2; 'Fiji's Future, the Indo-Fijian struggle' This second installment tells the story of post colonial Fiji and the power struggles between the descendants of the Indian Indentured laborers and the native Fijians. Starting with the country!s Independence in 1970 and up to the present, including projected events through 2014.
