Evidence of Things Not Seen: Architecture & Christian Symbolism at Shadyside Presbyterian Church

Pittsburgh's Shadyside Presbyterian Church, completed in 1890, is one of the best Richardsonian Romanesque structures not designed by H. H. Richardson himself. A remarkable 1938 transformation of the sanctuary introduced a liturgically complex worship space.Surprisingly, it also brought explicit Christian symbolism to a church in the Reformed tradition that did not display a Cross inside until a decade later. This book explores the symbolic meaning of the architectural arrangement, liturgical furnishings, religious sculpture and artistic expression on both the exterior and the interior of this historic building.
