Description

Lynched! is based on five years of exhaustive research, interviews with hundreds of primary and secondary sources, and thousands of pages of documents surrounding superlobbyist Jack Abramoff's efforts on behalfof his tribal clients, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana islands, and SunCruz. The paperwork reveals that Abramoff engaged in routine lobbying practices and that he was set up in a conspiracy hatched by Sen. John McCain, MGM/General Motors, and their liberal/neoconservative cohorts, who sought to set him up for wrongful prosecution since Abramoff was blocking casinos in which they had a vested interest. Abramoff was also effectively blocking union-backed legislation on the CNMI, leading to a frivolous Milberg Weiss-driven billion dollar class action that downed the garment manufacturers there. The false accusers influenced public offices at every turn and enlisted sophisticated lobbyists and public relations personnel to take down this once powerful man whose influence extended into the highest offices of the land. This book provides comprehensive coverage of how and why Abramoff was set up, delving into the corruption of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in which special interests aligned with GM/MGM placed fictitious Indians at the helm of power, displacing genuine Indians within their own tribal government. These interests allegedly had a financial stake in the casinos that were being developed within this tribe and other tribes of questionable legitimacy throughout the state of Michigan. Abramoff empowered the genuine Indians to reclaim their market, placing a bulls eye on his back. The conspiracy was spawned within the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the first tribe in the nation to acquire gaming and which had extensive influence with the tribes at the center of the Abramoff investigation. Upon entering the Florida market to purchase the SunCruz gaming fleet, the Seminoles were attempting to acquire a gaming compact blocked by the state legislature. Abramoff stood to obstruct the tribe's efforts, but the tribe stopped him in his tracks by injecting fraud into the loan through an in it had acquired with Abramoff's reckless partner, Adam Kidan. Greenberg Traurig, Abramoff's employer, served as the Seminole's gaming advisor, ensuring that the superlobbyist was effectively delivered to the Department of Justice. Lobbyists associated with the Seminoles, coordinated by leading McCain fundraiser Scott Reed, reached out to tribal dissidents among Abramoff's tribal clients, who leaked false information to the local media, alleging pillaging. The allegations, refuted by paperwork provided by the tribes, were then picked up by the Washington Post, at the direction of said lobbyists, and then sensationalized throughout the nation with the assistance of PR firms. Abramoff was subsequently set up for criminal prosecution, with Greenberg Traurig facilitating the investigation and Reed and his cohorts advising dissidents to give false statements in the Senate Indian Affairs Committee where McCain and his fellow conspirator, Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, held the levers of power, ensuring that a false narrative against Abramoff became part of the public record. With Abramoff effectively imprisoned, the casinos in which GM/MGM had an interest expanded throughout Michigan, and special interests affiliated with Campbell and McCain tapped Abramoff's tribal clients for lucrative crony contracts. Greenberg Traurig attempted to feed at the trough by joining its allies within he Saginaw Chippewas to transform Michigan into a major tourist destination replete with a Seminole-backed Hard Rock-branded casino after the firm negotiated the Seminoles acquisition of the Hard Rock franchise. The information contained within this book was presented to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee and House Oversight Committee, but no action was taken. This book was used by Abramoff's counsel and witnesses during his 2008 sentencing hearing.
