Black, Gifted and Gay

While the African-American experience is often lost in the conversation about what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) in today’s culture, the gifted artists, entertainers, thinkers and community leaders profiled here remind us all that our community exists in many forms. This book is an exploration of what it means to be a part of LGBT culture, and a part of African-American culture, at the same time. Originally inspired by Lorraine Hansberry‘s book To Be Young, Gifted and Black, as well as I Dream A World, the groundbreaking book of African-American portraiture, Black, Gifted and Gay highlights portraits of twenty African-American icons who have had the courage to publicly claim their place in the LGBT community. The courage, commitment and accomplishments of these ground-breaking men and women serve as an inspiration to us all.
