Cultures and armies collide when Sark Ekkarar, a gifted general from the small but wealthy republic of Surtar, finds his boring peacetime life interrupted by a barbarian invasion that threatens the neighboring kingdom. His old friendship with Sargala's king forces him to choose between loyalties and sets in motion a chain of events with worldwide repercussions. Meanwhile, a strong-willed young woman who talks to vultures and a smartmouthed berserker with a penchant for extravagant violence are just two of the characters swept up in Sark's wake.
