The Great Heavenly Soldier: David, Giantslayer: Christians, Titanbusters

The greatest epic recorded in the pages of the Bible might be the story of King David. He was just a shepherd when Samuel, the prophet, anointed him as the next king of Israel. His career is the most colorful as compared to those who had the honor of being mentioned by the Almighty in His book. He rose from the lowliest of ranks and led Israel to become the greatest nation on earth. It was during his reign when Canaan was finally subjugated. His brilliant career, however, was not without setbacks. He struggled with his own shortcomings, the rebellion of Absalom and the five giants who tried to challenge him. Interestingly, his battles with the titans were shown to be related with the king’s conduct in his pursuit of power. They are not just skirmishes but are also types for the greater battles he fought in his life. What might be more amazing are the lessons the king’s battles are teaching Christians. We, the believers, are fighting, even today, the same giants with whom the former shepherd fought. The titans were types for the fallen beings who are in constant struggle to bring the believers down. Were there really giants? Why were they called ‘men of renown’ during the period before the Great Flood? And why did the titans fail to become noteworthy as triumphant warriors after the Deluge?
