Anna Grayson, in her late thirties, is lovely and petite, with white pixie-cut hair, and delicate hands and feet. She has been alone for over a decade due to a freakishly-persistent string of accidents beginning when she was nine years old and ending in her mid-twenties. Superstitiously believing herself to be the cause of those tragedies, she has reconciled herself to a life of isolation, maintaining only arm's-length relationships with workplace acquaintances. But cracks are beginning to appear in her self-sufficiency when she meets the charming, irresistible Daniel, whose overwhelming love threatens to overturn her small, serene life.
These two damaged people, armored against intimacy, meet while suspended on a broken elevator in Los Angeles. The elevator serves as a little disconnected pocket of time - the bizarre circumstance shakes loose their paralysis; some curious new chemistry goes to work and they are impelled to set aside their usual strategies and try something different.
The story touches on how normal people deal with their losses and how celebrities deal with (or fail to deal with) their fame. Anna and Daniel do come together, but happiness is at first crazily out of reach. An old enemy intervenes; a high-seas accident threatens everything; and they must finally stop being crippled by the failures and losses of their former lives.
