Atlas of Nasal Cytology for the Differential Diagnosis of Nasal Diseases

In recent years cytology has grown in importance among the many medical specialties because of its demonstrated practical benefits. Diagnosis of inflammatory diseases is a major aspect of Rhinology, both due to the incidence of these diseases and the problems encountered when seeking precise diagnoses, etiologies and pathogeneses in order to provide optimal therapies. Nasal cytology is still a little-used diagnostic technique, yet it has proved crucial in the diagnosis of a number of nasal diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, NARES (non-allergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome), NARNE (non-allergic rhinitis with neutrophils), NARMA (non-allergic rhinitis with mast cells) and NARESMA (non-allergic rhinitis with eosinophils and mast cells). This atlas was prepared in order to meet several needs. It provides an explanation for specific aspects of nasal cytology along with a theoretical approach to the topic, while including many illustrations showing specific cell morphology features of different nasal diseases. In addition to the wealth of intricately detailed color illustrations showing the cytological features of each type of disease considered, it also provides clear and comprehensive descriptions of swab taking and other technical procedures. All the while, it makes ongoing references to the etiologies and pathogeneses of the various disease processes involved.
