Lincoln and Grant: The Westerners Who Won the Civil War

This is the first-ever book-length study of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. It describes their similar ordinary "Western" backgrounds, their early struggles to succeed, and their pre-Civil War lives. Primarily, it traces their Civil War activities as President and rising general, respectively, and discusses how they developed a successful working relationship as the war proceeded. Finally, the last chapter analyzes the reasons for their successful partnership: their common traits, mutual respect and loyalty, and their working relationships in a variety of areas.
