Description

‘Sarah’ Expect the Unexpected By Dale J Ovenstone. My very first attempt at writing a story, so please excuse my grammar mistakes (yes, all of them if you wouldn't mind) and that old cliché you only learn once you've made that first boo boo 'too much haste' to self publish. A light-hearted & humorous tale about 14 year old Dale, babysitting in his mum's friend's. house, and unwittingly experiencing an eerie, paranormal presence later that night. (which inspired me to write this book.) The story is interwoven with actual accounts of the strange haunting: and part fiction (from my imagination) the experiences of which unfolded one outrageously stormy night late in September, 1974. Opening in the summer of 1936; a perfectly new, red brick council house is blighted for all eternity, all because of cruel neglect, and shockingly, the death of a child living on the continuously developing, council estate. Yet no one spoke out. Nearly forty years later, summer in Ely is an absolute ice cream war-battleground over on the racecourse, and we hit yet another recession; more coal strikes, electricity blackouts, jobs losses and inexhaustible dole queues, separations, break-ups cheating and affairs of the heart. Sweet and smooth, soul music and Bob Marley, Status Quo & such like and so forth. 14 year old Dale. Quick, reality profile check: Vibrant and lively. Funny, & trying to be serious. Weedy & nerdy. A kid who looked quite half his age. Bully smacked and got pelleted (on the way to school, on the way home from school. Out in the streets & when camping.) Bruce Lee fanatic (and an irately crap practitioner, may I add.) Wanting to impress that sweet girl who moved in across the road and will do anything to impress (if he can overcome his shyness, that is.) Coming to terms with manhood (to grow taller, like his mates, even to sprout at least one fickle hair, on his baby chin. Find out what it was like living in the crazy era of the 70's, on the historically, medieval grounds surrounding Ely's Council Estate.
