The battle at Armageddon ends in victory and Iron Rod proceedings begin. Among the dead who are brought back to life after the war is a former U.S. Solicitor General, Lily Medicinebow. She agrees to represent the United States and requests a large number of historical materials, including an unorthodox brief filed in the Supreme Court in the years before the war. That time was marked by frightening upheavals and events on earth and in the sky. The American government was controlled by lobbyists and their rich clients. Presidents and vice presidents are routinely ushered into office by less than 600 women and men on the infamous Electoral College. Often, as with Martin Quince, citizens other than those selected by the "electors" are overwhelmingly elected by the merely advisory and useless popular vote. Over a century of yearly protests in Washington have failed to end the reign of lobbyists and to obtain a direct vote for vice president and president. Before Quince became a politician, he was an ace Banshee pilot destined for deep-space demolition work beyond the Oort Cloud. To the tiny cadre of electors and lobbyists who groomed him to be the governor of Texas and later, to be America's president, he is happily no boat-rocker. On his watch, there is no hand-wringing over the blood-red moon, the incoming fire and ice from interstellar space, or the darkened sun. Nor is Quince stirred by religious leaders who fear that the time of the Judgment of Nations is at hand.
