One Shining Moment: The Real Life adventures of a Volunteer Police Officer

Take a radio station Promotions Director/DJ, give him a gun, night stick and pepper spray... and a badge. Then put him into a police car and say, "Go uphold the law." Actually, the author volunteered for this... he went to a police academy, bought a uniform, a bullet-proof vest and volunteered his time in a real police car. Picture a darkened alley. Imagine screams and a gun shot. You wouldn't go down that alley for a million bucks. A cop does it for a lot less. A Reserve Officer does it for free. All over the country, men and women volunteer their time—and risk their lives—as reserve police officers. Most, you can imagine, are not like this author... This is what happens when your every day radio station goofball decides to volunteer his time as a Reserve Police Officer. Excerpt: The Stu and I turned our gaze up the street, along the direction of her arm, where we saw a young African-American male. This gentleman appeared to be in his mid-20s. He was wearing only blue jeans and was carrying about four feet of a broken shovel handle. And he was striding towards us with a purpose. And this is where it happened.
