The Primitive Methodist movement was founded by Hugh Bourne (1772-1852) and William Clowes (1780-1851). The movement touched the lives of many thousands of working class men, women and children in the rapidly changing times of the Industrial Revolution. The Primitive Methodists were so-called because they wished to revert to the "early" or "primitive" Methodism of John Wesley.
