When I Get Free...

This is a book based on a journal kept by a young man who was incarcerated in the South Carolina Department of Corrections in 2008. Troy Sheppard was a homeless drug addict. In the depths of his addiction, he committed crimes that he would regret for the rest of his life. While incarcerated, his thoughts about what led him to prison are explored and examined in great detail. In the first part he explains the actions that landed him in jail. Recalling the desperate acts he committed in order to maintain his habit, he expresses remorse and slowly accepts his fate of going to prison. The second part begins while he's waiting in the county jail to go to court for his charges. With a hope towards the future and a genuine desire to change, he makes a plan for his life when he's released. In the third part he keeps a journal while incarcerated at the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, South Carolina.

This detailed account of one man's experience with prison and dealing with addiction in a last ditch effort to save his own life is a powerful story about hope and survival under incredible adversity.
