Slave Song

Slave Song is a compelling story about the love within a Black family and the perseverance of this love, which must overcome the obstacles of slavery and the Civil War. When Coleman Hawkins, a colored freedman, goes bankrupt, his wife and daughter are sold back into slavery at an auction. Seeking vengeance, Coleman enlists in the Union Army where he finds satisfaction for the wrongs done to his family. Coleman’s daughter, Clara, survives during the War by gaining hope and strength through singing a slave song. This educational story appeals to all lovers of fiction, but especially those interested in the Civil War and Black history, military combat and strategy, and historical Black music.
