Imagine a world reduced to only a tenth of its current population by a devastating mutation of the influenza virus. Would law and order survive? Riots and looting in London and other cities in the United Kingdom a year ago went unchecked for several days, even with a full police force available. What chance would the police have with only a tenth of their number? Surrounded by unchecked public disorder, would you risk going to work and leave your family behind to face unknown dangers? Regardless of your personal views, there would be many that wouldn’t take the risk. Maybe thousands or millions of electricity, gas, water, sanitation and telecommunications workers wouldn’t take the risk. How long would essential public utilities continue? What then? How would you restore sanity from chaos? This is the story of a small rural town that took the law into their own hands and survived, and ultimately led the way for the nation to recover.
