Rape's Aftermath: Survivor's Story: For Victims and Offenders

Deborah Ann Huber is a mother, a daughter, and a sister. She is also a therapist and a student.

All of these things combine to make her much more than a rape survivor—although that's part of her story too. Though it continues to shape who she is, she will not be defined by her past.

Huber shares these thoughts in Rape's Aftermath: Survivor's Story. She details her experience from crime through recovery, touching on its effects on her parenting and career. Growing up she had internalized the idea that rape happened to people who deserved it, leading her to be needy and emotionally unstable. But when she had her first child, she knew she must learn to survive—if not for her for, then for someone else.

"I live not with my abuse but in spite of it," Huber says. "My role is to be a healthy sexual being and not allow my abuser to change who I really am any longer."

Rape's Aftermath is not only for survivors but also for others who want to know more about the trauma and how it can be overcome. She not only survives but now serves as a therapist for abusers.
