After Tommy's first traumatic week at Mission Valley High, the rest of the year flowed smoothly by with no more than the usual amount of fear, humiliation and anxiety. Brad hunter and some of the other bullies had left Tommy alone thanks to a favor Tommy had done for Bull Turner the first week of school. Though Bull was no friend of Tommy's, he repaid the obligation by making it clear that Tommy was not to be messed with. Now it was the last day of school, the bell had rung and students were cleaning out their lockers and rushing to get out of the building and begin three months of freedom.
