9 Design Principles makes the case for extending the Enneagram from personality types to systems, and shows how we can design, assess, and build intelligent, prosperous systems at the individual, organizational, societal levels. The Enneagram is a powerful tool for self-awareness, personal development, and emotional intelligence that teaches us to look inside, helps us to see what we would otherwise not see, and shows us how we get stuck in vicious cycles. It has brought great illumination. In order to architect healthy systems that enable us to function together to perform “the complex tasks required in a modern society,” we can extend this model of personality typology, vicious cycles, and levels, focused on the individual, to a systems framework of the whole and the interaction of the parts. Extending this new thinking to groups, organizations, and the collective will help us design, manage, and sustain thriving lives, families, schools, businesses, industries, communities, and societies, and help us move past the scarcity, conflict, inequality, instability, externalities, and moral hazards that plague our modern experience.
