Description

SMART (http://smart.uow.edu.au/index.html) is a world-class comprehensive Research and Training Infrastructure Facility of integrated laboratories designed to transform the way that infrastructure-related disciplines are taught and researched. The SMART building (Building 6) at the University of Wollongong also exemplifies the use of advanced design to reduce environmental footprint. This is a brief report estimating (1) the carbon footprint and (2) the water footprint of the SMART building. The report is professionally presented. Apart from the information given relevant assumptions are made. The report is split in two sections. SECTION I is a draft estimation of the carbon and water footprints of the SMART building. There is a discussion and comparison of the footprint indicators. SECTION II consists of three parts. PART 1 discusses reduction in energy primary energy use, greenhouse emissions and waste resulting from the construction and demolition of the building. PART 2 is a discussion about the reduction in primary energy use and emissions from the operation of the building through demand-side management (e.g. energy efficiency measures of equipment). PART 3 discusses reduction in greenhouse emissions by employing on-site renewable or alternative energy distributed generation systems (e.g. co-generation, solar hot water, PV, etc).
