The Mercian Register: Aedred and Edward

The magic kingdom of Mercia is again in upheaval. After a nine years’ peace following the birth of Prince Cenred, the enemy forces are again beginning to gather, this time aided by an enemy within the court. Eorl Tilhere, the king’s trusted administrative reeve, is in love with Queen Elfwina. Incensed by Aedred’s treatment of her and the prince, he enlists her brother’s support, helping King Edward of Wessex come secretly into the kingdom to see Elfwina. Alarmed at what Tilhere has revealed to him, Edward tries to persuade his sister to take their son and go with him to Wessex. Learning about this meeting, Aedred imprisons his wife. Against his own principles, he takes his army into Wessex and attacks King Edward. The result is what neither king could foretell . . . .
