Technology Economics: Ethylene via Ethanol Dehydration

Ethylene is most frequently produced from petroleum-based feedstock. However, rising oil prices coupled with global concerns about sustainability and global warming have motivated research into ethylene manufacture from renewable sources. Fermentation-derived ethanol has been increasingly used as raw material for renewable ethylene production, presenting the primary advantage of being made from CO2 removed from the atmosphere. The technical aspects of a process to produce ethylene via ethanol dehydration are reviewed, as well as the key economic parameters for the profitability of an ethanol dehydration plant.
