Ethylene is most frequently produced from petroleum-based feedstock. However, rising oil prices coupled with global concerns about sustainability and global warming have motivated research into ethylene manufacture from renewable sources. Fermentation-derived ethanol has been increasingly used as raw material for renewable ethylene production, presenting the primary advantage of being made from CO2 removed from the atmosphere. The technical aspects of a process to produce ethylene via ethanol dehydration are reviewed, as well as the key economic parameters for the profitability of an ethanol dehydration plant. This study follows the same pattern as all Technology Economics studies developed by Intratec.
