You Can Count On It: A Mentor's Arithmetic Patterns For Elementary Students

The Text This text is the first of several projected books aimed at helping elementary school teachers in at least five ways. 1) The earliest part of “You Can Count On It” has shown itself to be a benefit for teaching first and second grade children just beginning their study of mathematics, enabling these youngest children to understand at a basic level the four fundamental operations on natural numbers. 2) Using most of the book, teachers can engage third and fourth graders with the four operations on signed numbers and fractions. 3) For mentors of children in the upper elementary and middle school years, the text helps fill in gaps missed by so many in their earliest classes, yet gaps that are assumed by the standard curricula. 4) Thought provoking exercises beyond mere repetition, such as square roots, appear. 5) Finally, for mentors of those select students eager to race through any standard curriculum, this text prepares them for the projected “Polygons and Polynomials” pre-calculus text, and in turn for “Tangents and Areas” to explore polynomial calculus in the seventh and eighth grades.
