The 61 photographs in this book are a great insight into the steam locomotives of the pre-World War II era of 1937 to 1940. They are just a sampling of the William R. Dewey, Jr. Collection of Railroad Locomotive Negatives and are limited to photographs of locomotives in Michigan and other Midwestern states, as well as in Ontario, Canada.The book is divided into four chapters. The first chapter has photographs taken in the Detroit area. The second chapter has photographs from Ontario as they represent an interesting perspective of not only the Canadian railroads but also of the U.S. railroads that had operations there. The third chapter has photographs from the rest of Michigan. The last chapter has miscellaneous photographs from other Midwestern states, such as Ohio, Illinois and Iowa, that supplement the rest of the photographs by filling out some of the locomotive rosters of the railroads covered in the other chapters and adding a few railroads not previously covered.
