The Horses I've Loved: A Memoir

In 2006, life was grand for Susan and her family. She and her husband had recently moved from Idaho to Texas. They had been exploring the new culture of living in the Dallas area. She had joined a book club, made new ‘horse friends’ and was enjoying the next chapter in her life. On October 1, all of her bliss changed in an instant. The day before, she’d had a wonderful day of riding. Her magnificent horse, Race, was doing lead changes on every other stride. He was perfect that day, up the arena and back down. The next morning, Susan found Race behind the barn, sick, feverish and lethargic. An anxious call to her Veterinarian and an hour trailer ride to the emergency clinic brought a glimmer of hope. But, at the end of the day, Race had died and Susan’s perfect life had fallen apart. This book came into being as a form of therapy to deal with the loss of her beloved horse. As she remembered her life with him, memories from all of her amazing horses came flooding back. These are their stories.
