Description
Most people are aware of the aircraft squadrons and bases of the Royal Air Force and many have been covered by books over the years. For flying squadrons to operate there required to be a myriad of 'backroom' units ranging from catering, training, medical, transport and maintenance to name but a few. This book covers one such unit, 71 MU, otherwise known as No. 71 Maintenance Unit. From forming in 1940 until disbanding in 1976 the unit carried out various tasks for the RAF including recovering crashed aircraft, moving aircraft for repair and carrying out repairs and modifications. The unit's work can be seen today at the RAF museum, Hendon in the forms of Lancaster 'S for Sugar', Sunderland Flying Boat and Halifax W1048.
