Flight of the Half-Moon

Betty’s memories are mercilessly haunting her—sometimes delightfully. Her heart thaws, simmers, then refreezes with her recollections. She’s walking an emotional gangplank that she has avoided since her whale expedition in Patagonia ended in terror twenty-five years ago. Her team consisted of a beaten-down young man and two leathery gauchos bound for folklore. And there was Brian, the man she blamed for the carnage. Between the five there was only one goodbye. Betty returned to her fiancé. On her honeymoon, she discovered a book with a gruesome yet passionate etching on the cover depicting the last scene of her expedition. Only Brian could have known of it; it was probably his doing. She bought the book but could never get past the cover. She will today, and her torment will double when she discovers the saga of Patagonia is unfinished. Betty feels her very essence expanding as she recalls the marvel and majesty that preceded the end.
