Description

The Americans were dumping bad grain into Mexico. It was supposed to be for cattle, but often ended up in the local shops. This is a diary kept by the Scottish captain of the rig (tug & barge) which hauled that grain from the Mississippi River and the Houston Ship Canal, ‘down Mexico way’ to the Yucatan Peninsula. The rig was Mexican owned and it broke all the rules - and too many laws! But this is also a story of five distinct cultures: Mayan, Texan, Filipino, British and Cajun (from the Mississippi Delta) – in seemingly perpetual, often confused conflict, so providing an ever changing backdrop to the rig’s mechanical and technical inadequacies which, in an instant, could turn even the most ordinary manoeuvre into a dangerous game of chance. It’s also a laugh a minute as the captain strove to somehow weld these different, warring factions together, to keep the whole enterprise afloat, both figuratively and above the seething waves..!
