LASTING PAIN: Memories of My Life This book of memories by historian Paula Gruber-Herszkopf details her life in Poland before, during and after the Holocaust, followed by her experiences in Canada and Holland. During the Second World War, Paula Herszkopf (born 1924) and her family manage to escape deportation by hiding at different addresses. She and her family are ultimately betrayed and sent to Auschwitz, where only Paula survives. After the liberation, Paula goes to Canada, aiming to emigrate to the United States. However, being refused immigration papers, she returns to Poland and attempts to establish a life with her new husband, Simon Gruber. Forced out by virulent anti-Semitism, Paula, Simon and daughter Eva leave for the Netherlands. Paula portrays herself, from her youngest years, as a person who strives to be enterprising, with a great feeling of responsibility for herself and for others. The bonds of friendship and mutual support are essential in her life and help her to survive.
