Who Am I and Where Did I Come From?: Pathways to the Past

It is not uncommon that as we age we develop an interest in our family's ancestry. Sometimes there is no longer any family member alive to ask about such history. The author details his search in this genealogical study; in one case, documenting an ancestor back to 1739! Then, imagine finding out that one great-great grandparent was the recognized and acknowledged leader of the Jewish community in a village in Bohemia! Learn how he "found out" about his grandmother's siblings; one who died in World War I, another in the Holocaust, and three others who were never spoken of! Discover the story of meeting, face-to-face, a cousin who he never knew existed. He describes the history and nature of the areas in Europe from which they came; and then, what life was like for European Jewish immigrants who settled in New York City. Everyday life is described for these immigrants and their children; this first-born generation of new Americans that lead up to the current family members of today. The author verbalizes and creates a closeness with his family that many people may have felt, but never openly expressed. He then details his own life so that his children, grandchildren, and future generations of this family, will not have to search for their roots as he did.
