“Our backs were covered in ice, as we marched slowly into the fog. This had become a monotonous exercise, and our hearts had become numb to death over the past three months. It happened all around us, in the grass and the leaves, as if the Earth herself slowly spoke farewells, and sunk deep into herself, leaving us here to wither alone. Then came today. A signal of life. A tiny sprout near the stables peeked through at us, showing us her beautiful, green skin in a sea of ash. As if she spoke to the surrounding earth in encouragement, I began to watch as the trees around me twisted, breaking off their old bark and exposing a beautiful brown underneath. The grass began to stretch, the blooms began to open their eyes. The earth was growing, waking up, and I along with it.”
