When antibiotics wouldn't work, an exciting high school band trip from Illinois to perform in New York City turned into a potential tragedy, as The Breakfast Lady: God's Work Near and Far Author Gail Fyke's son Austin Fyke battled for his life. Through the careful care of doctors and medical teams in several locations, Austin emerged from surgery to clean a brain abscess alive and mending but still in need of treatment to make a full recovery. From the emergency room at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville, New Jersey, where the brain abscess was diagnosed, to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, where the surgery was performed by a pediatric neurosurgeon and a pediatric ENT, to home in Illinois and their Chicago medical team, Austin and the Fykes' story is one of resilience and the power of prayer, care, and community.
