Progress Toward Development in Latin America: From Prebisch to Technological Autonomy

Building on the positive features of the economic commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) "structuralist" approach to Latin America's severe economic problems, this book advances innovative strategies for improving long-term development prospects in the region. The authors first identify inherent failures in the CEPALista theory and then propose a revitalized scheme that focuses on removing internal barriers to change while nurturing the mechanisms and institutions that can strengthen indigenous technological progress. They emphasize throughout the importance of development strategies that will invest Latin Americans with the capacity to adopt, and adapt to, rapid technological progress.
