First reported in the early 1980s, AIDS has since been diagnosed in more than a half million people in the United States alone, more than 60 percent of whom have died from the disease. A cure has so far eluded medical science, and the methods of preventing the spread of HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS, have sparked widespread controversy.
