The fourth edition of this volume conveys fundamental information on the mechanisms of the action of toxicants on the skin, the varied responses of skin to specific toxicants and approaches to evaluating dermal toxicity. Testing methods are examined (in vitro and in vivo), with particular attention being focused on in vitro methods as a potential means of reducing the use of laboratory animals. Some chapters have been revised and there are also some new chapters. Topics covered are percutaneous penetration, ultraviolet light and its capacity to energize photo-active chemicals, cutaneous carcinogenesis with and without light, the possibility that reproduction might be affected by skin contact with medicaments, the development of alternative test methods for skin and eyes, methods suggested by industry and regulating agencies for monitoring and evaluating the safety of topical drugs and cosmetics and commercial products. There is also a review of dermatologic drugs and various chemicals.
