Guard Us Sleeping: Compline Psalms, Prayers, and Hymns for the Night

Compline, the ancient service of psalms, hymns, and prayers at night, is sung by the brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist. Since ancient times, women and men of faith have murmured prayers at the end of the day—prayers for protection, prayers for peace, for sound sleep and good health. The brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist continue that tradition in their daily round of monastic prayer. Join them each night as they sing the praise of God before sleeping, and as they pray for the Church, the world, and themselves, asking for the protection of God to “guard us sleeping.”

This moving CD includes two versions of Compline and twenty hymns for the night. Included are beloved favorites, “Abide with me”, “The day thou gavest”, “Day by day”, “God be in my head”, and “God, that madest earth and heaven”, as well as lesser-known “standards” sung at the monastery where the brothers live and worship. Also included are seven plainsong hymns tracing the full sweep of the liturgical year.
