This is a new look at one of history s great terror campaigns, when in late 1944 the Japanese unveiled a terrifying new tactic: the suicide attack, or kamikaze, named after the divine wind that had once before, in medieval times, saved Japan from invasion. Intentionally crashing bombladen aircraft into Allied warships, these piloted guided missiles at first seemed unstoppable, calling into question the naval strategy on which the whole war effort was based. It documents the origins, strategic goals, and organization of Japan s special attack forces, as well as the culture that made suicide an honorable inevitability.
