The last Nimitz Class carrier, CVN-77, was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding in January 2001 and is scheduled to deliver in March 2008. CVN-77 will also serve as the "bridge" platform for technologies that will enable the Navy to transition from the Nimitz class to the next generation aircraft carrier (CVNX). CVN-77 will include new technologies such as an integrated topside island which includes a new multi-function radar, new propulsion plant monitoring improvements, and manpower reduction initiatives.
