A hot Sunday afternoon, a lone soldier in a canvas-topped, Army-green Jeep, and a twist of fate. Suddenly, knobby tires skid across rain-slicked blacktop and the Jeep leaves the road. When it's all over, the body of the ton-and-a-quarter vehicle is a mass of crumpled steel. The body of the driver lies suspended in the wreckage, broken, bleeding, and strangely immobile. Labeled a quadriplegic at the age of 21, Larry Wills faced the greatest challenge of his young life. "When life gives you lemons . . .," the saying goes, but was there enough left of this injured soldier to make lemonade? The doctors offered only so much hope; the soldier wanted more, beginning with a way to escape the hospital's dungeon-like corridors. In the more than 35 years since his accident, Larry has consistently refused to recognize the limits placed on him by circumstance.
