The Gauntlet

From demigod Heracles to the more contemporary icon Superman, history abounds with mythic stories of powerful heroes. Some are powered mystically, while others are mere humans no more gifted than the rest of us. This however is all fantasy. In reality, people do not don colorful costumes with the intent of intruding on the illicit business of others. They do not put themselves in harm’s way and mask their identity from those they seek to protect. Do they? Detective Emily Garwin has searched for answers to the mysterious savior of Reed City, if one truly exists. Some have witnessed this figure’s heroics, while others have but the faintest clue of their ordeal. Criminals are fearful and a few people cheer the selfless endeavors. In searching for the truth behind these unlawfully busted crimes, Emily encounters aspects of her past long considered resolved. The trials of hunting a flesh-and-blood vigilante shall tax her physically and emotionally. And more corpses found in her protectorate belie their superficial nature, giving rise to a larger conundrum. Who is this unseen individual? A supernatural force of nature? Act of God? Or perhaps a mortal capable of succumbing to mortal desires of vengeance?
