A SENSE OF THE SEA: Our View of the Sea and How We Got It

We all have a sense of the sea around us, but we can sense something without understanding it. Most of what we know about the sea is a result of navy-backed programs conducted during World War II and the Cold War that followed. Although they changed our understanding of the sea, their results remain largely unknown to the public-at-large. As a result, most people grew up with a perception of the sea, but little knowledge of it.
