1969 was a tumultuous time of tantalizing promiscuity and eroding moral conduct. In those days of psychedelic ideologies, young Sam Caffee, a presumptuous pre-med student has dumped his girl, sweet Katie Laruso. Jolted by tragedy into a sudden awareness of life's frailty, Sam makes the definitive choice to chase the forbidden fruits of life, forsaking things known and trusted to pursue things not yet tried. Facing a gruesome chemistry course, Sam remains at school for the summer term. For fun and without his consent, drinking buddy, Big Dan Burmer, signs them up to coach a little league baseball team. And into Sam's world enters a buck-toothed kid possessing an uncanny resemblance to a lost friend. Tormented by a boorish professor whose methods produce academic failure never before known, and frustrated in his pursuit of things carnal, Sam is forced to grudgingly confess that coaching the little baseball team is more edifying than it should be. As the summer term grinds to an inglorious conclusion and Sam is confronted by the truth which launched his promiscual pursuits, a grievous notion tortures his soul that maybe dumping Katie wasn't so smart. Has Sam lost her forever? Will sweet Katie come back?
