Elena Jones’ cardinal sin was to marry an Englishman. After being disowned by her parents and made an outcast from the Cypriot village where she was born, Elena swore she would never go back. The village, seemingly secluded from the outside world, was an EOKA stronghold in the late 1950’s. The inhabitants have bitter memories of atrocities by British soldiers; twenty graves in the cemetery bear witness to this, one being Elena’s uncle. Fifteen years later, happily married and living in Manchester, she is suddenly summoned to the island to identify the body of her husband who had been found on a deserted beach; executed by a shot to the back of the head. How he came to be in Cyprus is a complete mystery. From the moment Elena arrives on the island, a deadly game emerges played in many shades against the backdrop of a vibrant holiday destination and a village that exists in the past. She is immediately subject to surveillance by a number of people. The detective investigating the crime, an old boyfriend from her student days, and her brother, a not so pious priest whose sexual appetite is putting his marriage and career in jeopardy, are keen for her to leave the island immediately. Through their furtive actions and deceit Elena suspects a cover-up. She is determined to find her husband’s killers but comes up against a wall of silence. But, nothing is going to dissuade Elena from discovering the truth.
