Amelia Penrose and her twin brother James were abandoned as babies in a trunk outside a Liverpool orphanage, where they were raised by the matron, Elizabeth. When she was eighteen, Amelia married American sailor Miles Carter and they moved to Seattle, before setting off to the Klondike where they hoped to make their fortune.
