Urban Transport XVII Urban Transport and the Environment in the 21st Century contains the edited version of most of the papers presented at the 17th International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment, held June 6-8, 2011, in Pisa, Italy. The conference was the latest in a well-established annual series that began in 1995 and examines how transport and traffic affect the urban environment, as well as safety, security and efficiency. Transport developments and innovations have been part of the evolution of human culture through all the different stages of the growing complexity of economic and social relationships.
