37 years have passed since the very first Boundary Element Methods Conference took place in Southampton, UK, in 1978, and yet the Method continues to be constantly developed. Since 1978 the Conference has produced a series of volumes in which all major developments in the field, formulations as well as applications, have been presented. The strength of BEM is in great part due to its ability to incorporate new concepts and ideas. The most remarkable of them has been the development of Mesh Reduction Techniques, an area of research which continues to produce excellent papers as evidenced by the contents of this book. The ultimate aim of Boundary Element research is to arrive at solutions that require neither internal mesh, even in the case of non-linear or time-dependent problems, nor surface meshes in general. This objective is becoming more feasible as the research progresses. Equally important has been the emergence of powerful and robust boundary element software tools, which are now constantly used in engineering practice. The acceptance of any new idea in industry is the best proof of its validity and importance.
